The Prodigal Son

A wayward son squanders his inheritance but finds redemption and forgiveness upon his return home.

The Story

In a distant land, a man had two sons, and one day, the younger son approached his father with an audacious request: he demanded his share of the inheritance while his father was still alive, a request that shocked the family and defied the customs of respect and honor Luke 15:12^. The father, filled with love and sorrow, granted his son's wish and divided his estate between them. With his newfound wealth, the young man journeyed to a far-off country, where he indulged in reckless living, spending all he had on extravagant pleasures and wild parties Luke 15:13^.

As time passed, a severe famine struck the land, and the young man found himself in dire need, having squandered every last coin. In desperation, he hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him into the fields to feed pigs, a task that was not only degrading but also a stark reminder of his fallen state Luke 15:15^. Starving and alone, he longed to fill his stomach with the pods the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything Luke 15:16^.

In the depths of his despair, he came to his senses and realized that even his father’s hired servants had food to spare. He resolved to return home, humbled and repentant, and to say to his father, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants' Luke 15:18-19^. With a heavy heart but hope for forgiveness, he set off for his father's house, rehearsing his apology along the way.

As he approached his home, his father saw him from a distance and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him tightly, and kissed him, overwhelming the young man with love and acceptance Luke 15:20^. The son began his confession, but before he could finish, the father interrupted, calling for the best robe to be put on him, a ring for his finger, and sandals for his feet. He ordered a feast to be prepared, declaring, 'For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found' Luke 15:24^.

Meanwhile, the elder son, who had remained loyal and hard-working, returned from the fields and heard the celebration. Anger and resentment filled his heart as he confronted his father, questioning why such a feast was thrown for a son who had squandered his inheritance Luke 15:28^. The father gently replied, 'Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine' Luke 15:31^. He reminded the elder son that they should rejoice together, for the lost had been found, and the dead had come to life once more. This parable illustrates the boundless grace and mercy of God, welcoming back those who repent and return to Him with open arms.
