Daniel in the Lions' Den

Daniel, a faithful servant of God, faces a terrifying trial in a den of lions, but his unwavering faith leads to divine deliverance.

The Story

In the ancient kingdom of Babylon, a man named Daniel stood out among the wise men of the realm. His exceptional spirit and unwavering integrity had earned him favor with King Darius, who planned to appoint him over the entire kingdom Daniel 6:3^. This elevation stirred jealousy among the other officials, who conspired to find a way to undermine him. They knew that Daniel was a man of prayer, devoted to his God, and sought to exploit this devotion to bring about his downfall Daniel 6:5^.

The conspirators approached King Darius with a flattering proposal: to establish a decree that anyone who prayed to any god or man other than the king for thirty days would be thrown into the lions' den Daniel 6:7^. The king, swayed by their charm and the promise of unity, signed the decree, unaware of the trap laid for his most trusted advisor. With the decree in place, the officials watched closely, hoping to catch Daniel in his routine of prayer.

Undeterred by the royal edict, Daniel continued his practice of praying three times a day, facing Jerusalem and seeking the Lord with fervent faith Daniel 6:10^. The officials soon discovered his defiance and rushed to inform the king, who was deeply distressed upon realizing that his beloved Daniel would have to face the lions due to his own decree Daniel 6:14^. Despite the king's efforts to save Daniel, the law could not be revoked, and he reluctantly ordered Daniel to be cast into the den of lions Daniel 6:16^.

As Daniel was lowered into the dark, foreboding den, he remained calm, trusting in the Lord's protection. The king, unable to sleep that night, fasted and prayed for Daniel's safety Daniel 6:18^. At dawn, he hurried to the den, calling out to Daniel in anguish, “O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?” Daniel 6:20^. To his astonishment, Daniel replied, “O king, live forever! My God hath sent His angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me” Daniel 6:21-22^.

Filled with joy and relief, King Darius commanded that Daniel be lifted from the den. Not a scratch was found on him, for he had trusted in his God Daniel 6:23^. In a turn of justice, the king ordered those who had conspired against Daniel to be thrown into the den instead, where they were immediately devoured by the lions Daniel 6:24^. This miraculous event led King Darius to issue a decree throughout his kingdom, proclaiming the greatness of Daniel’s God, who delivered His servant from the jaws of death Daniel 6:26-27^. Daniel's faithfulness not only saved him but also brought glory to God, demonstrating that trust in the Almighty can overcome even the fiercest trials.
